Once a source of operational excellence, IT has now become a major source of strategic advantage. Eighty seven percent of respondents of a survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the IT Governance Institute (ITGI) say that IT is very important to the delivery of their corporate strategy and vision. For 63 percent of the respondents, IT is regularly on the board’s agenda. The top five IT investment outcomes that they mentioned are:
Achieving strategic goals
Producing relevant and pertinent information for the business
Ensuring that business-critical information is available when needed
Ensuring that business-critical information is reliable
Ensuring that the business-critical information is accurate and complete
All of these outcomes indicate the strategic and value-creation potential of IT. Despite IT becoming so important for the success of companies, four out of five respondents experienced problems with IT.
