Selling Governance to a Business Team

Governance in the IT world is a topic that can stir up a healthy debate around how it influences standards around performance and quality for a project. Due to the business scandals over the last few years, governance has received elevated attention especially as it relates to the financial and reporting aspect. Needless to say, Sarbanes-Oxley--and especially compliance--became a welcomed concept, especially to individual investors.
How should a project manager handle establishing the right level of governance, especially if the project does not include IT or finance but rather business teams such as account management or marketing? On the surface, the idea of governance can conjure up an image of a never-ending sea of meetings, templates and compliance check points. It is not uncommon to debate governance and governance models within a business team as a process that takes away from being able to get their day job done. In addition, what is the value of filling out a template, anyway?
If a governance model is not understood and accepted up front, a person is likely to spend more time trying to explain the purpose behind governance up front rather than moving forward completing the actual work that needs to get done. This article will explore how to establish the right governance process so it will be utilized and maintain within a business team.
