The PMP has turned out to become a market-leading credential for project management. While there is much focus on the road to the PMP, I believe that the best value lies in creating options beyond the PMP, the bases for which would have been set forth by the PMP credential.
 
I would propose that we shift focus of the PMP to make it a foundational credential for more senior or deeper credentials in this space. Over time, this will have the effect of raising the profile of the PMP, providing meaningful opportunities for progressive training and certification--while bringing value to all players in the industry.
 
In a nutshell, the main benefit of the PMP today is that it provides a standardized and structured definition and classification mechanism to bring order to the world of project management. It quantifies what project management does (or should do!) and provides boundary guidelines to help distinguish different pieces of the puzzle. But we all know that real-world projects and their problems don’t come in neatly defined packages that can be decoded using the secret keys uniquely taught to us by the PMP.
 
By providing a contextual framework along with declarative definitions of content, it sets a referential benchmark for what project management should be. Fair enough. It is a critical need, aptly met by the Project Management Institute. …
