Training: A Different Approach

The approach for developing and delivering training and readiness material within a company has been interesting. It used to be a one size fits “most all” approach. If an employee wanted to take a training class in order to augment their professional skills, there was an instructor-led course that lasted for several days. The employee received a large manual that was reviewed on a daily basis in a classroom-type environment.
 
As the Web became more popular, many companies saw the unique value of this medium for their training activities. Now training could be delivered online and thus drive costs out of the business, while at the same time expanding the potential reach of training efforts.
 
The question that emerges is: What about the student? How does this change in approach affect the student, whether the student is an employee or customer? Driving costs out of a business is a commendable act as it positively impacts a company’s bottom line. Traditional classroom-type training has been done for years, but what is the best learning channel for the employee or customer to get the full value of both internal and external training? This article will explore key lessons we can learn from the education and marketing professions in order to maximize training across multiple channels.
