The Born Identity

Over the years we have gone to extremes to define leadership, including qualities that make a good leader. One school of thought says great leaders are born not made. An opposite school of thought proclaims leaders can “be made”--in essence trained and mentored--and eventually, they develop into skilled leaders.
 
The question we have to ask ourselves is, why do we go to extremes in defining leadership? Perhaps leadership is a bit of both, or a quality an individual is born with in addition to qualities that are acquired or “made” during their career tenure.
 
Leaders are born
One fundamental quality that a leader must have is interpersonal skills and awareness. A true leader is born with this quality. When it is part of a person’s true DNA, leaders come across as authentic. With authenticity, a leader is more likely to garner the trust, respect and ultimately loyalty of people around him/her. Only certain aspects of interpersonal skills can be developed or “made” via training and mentoring.
 
Strong interpersonal skills emerge very early in a child’s life. If a child throws a tantrum because someone took their toy or someone doesn’t want to play their game, parents are more likely to put the culpability on the child being tired or not feeling well.
