Nick is planning for a project where gathering requirements is a key step--managing a major upgrade of the critical software used by his organization. The disaster which was the delivery of requirements for his last project remains cemented in his memory. The initial requirements ranged from inadequate to downright false, and after viewing the software delivered, the business representatives made many costly changes and additions.
 
Recently, there has been an organizational effort to improve how requirements are compiled. This effort has focused on more training for business analysts. Nick knows this training will not solve some problems he faced in his last project. He needs to complement this analyst training with a better project process for the analysts to follow. He also needs analysts who can excel within that process.
 
Tactics for Refining the Project Process 
Even though his analysts will have been trained, Nick will have to beef up communication in his plan and customize the deliverable template.
 
Cut Through Chaos with Early Communication. Business representatives are often busy, distracted and unprepared. Nick, who suffered from this problem last project, will have to put in his communication plan to alert business reps early. He will tell them the expected schedule and what information will be needed.
