Tom's latest eBook has been released on Amazon: "The 7 Myths of IT Integrations". Tom is also a Program Director for a large Midwest corporation and has been an adjunct faculty member at Walsh College. Isn’t IT great? We get to play with all of the latest technology--many times before it “officially” hits the street. IT has the benefit of seeing, touching and using some of the newest stuff and the most cutting edge gadgets of our industry. The stuff we get to see is so fantastic that “just wait until the business users get a load of this new gizmo”…
 
…but wait. Did we miss the boat? Is it possible we (gasp!) got it wrong?
 
Within Information Technology, we sometimes think that computers are the answer to everything. In the different IT groups that I have managed, I routinely saw this from my teams. IT people get really bored with a proven, pedestrian technology. “It’s old!” they cry. “We’ll fall behind the tech curve!” they lament. We love to be using something that no one else has yet. This thirst for the cutting edge is many times misaligned (if not polar opposites) with what the business is truly looking for. Often this leads to IT having a technology solution in search of problem. Sometimes IT is completely unaware of the business pain points and should work to identify the problems first and then work toward the solution.
 
Now don’t get me wrong, trying new stuff is necessary…but not if we are missing the fundamentals that we should be doing in the first …
