The Power of Collaboration

Web 2.0 has been a buzzword of choice for a couple of years now. Whether it is blogs, wikis, teamspaces, mashups or content sharing, there is no question that these technologies have been “en vogue” in facilitating enterprise collaboration. However, many IT chiefs have questioned whether the tools actually increase productivity or if they simply have become another distraction for already unfocused employees to take time away from critical projects. After watching several Web 2.0 efforts emanate from ground-up, I am now a full believer that the power of collaboration is real.
So what attributes of Web 2.0 bring the power of collaboration to life? In my mind, the main ones are: democratization of contribution, singular collection and total transparency of information. Let’s take these attributes one by one and explore them further.
By democratization of contribution, I mean the simple fact that in the Web 2.0 world, anyone who is an enrolled stakeholder in a contribution forum can easily contribute their content within that forum. Whether that is a process, a best practice or a response to someone’s query, they can simply go to the location of that forum and contribute their thoughts. Prior to Web 2.0, this was difficult to do as the heterogeneity and access mechanisms for these forums were non-standardized.
