While it often becomes ambiguous with the deluge of IT projects that occur in corporations, the primary purpose of an IT project is to deliver value to the business and enable a capability that wasn’t present before. This capability might be used to drive efficiencies in the way the business accomplishes certain tasks or may be used to generate additional revenue through avenues that were not present without the system.
However, in order to facilitate realization of these benefits, the business must change, streamline or grow. What often happens is that while the IT part of the project might be delivered successfully, the business does not do its part. The IT project is delivered, but the business does not execute its changes resulting in suboptimal realization of project benefits.
In order to be optimally structured to execute its necessary changes and realize benefits, the business needs to have a well-positioned lead who is project managing the business’ project. This business project manager runs a project that is separate from the IT project but clearly dependent on it. This business project will have a work plan, milestones, a budget and all of the standard project deliverables--but its sole purpose is to facilitate the necessary business change associated with an IT project.
So what are the key elements of this business project?
