I guess it’s confession time. I read the reports and saw the news stories about Earth Hour this year and I didn’t really take a lot of notice. I like to think that I’m reasonably aware of the environment and the impact that we are having on it, but Earth Hour never really struck me as anything more than a gimmick. But this year I was watching TV and there was an interview with a lady who worked for a big Toronto hotel. She was talking about what they were doing for Earth Hour, and the caption under her name indicated that she was part of the hotel’s green team.
This got my attention--a “Green Team”…that’s different. I started listening to her speak about what they were going to do; remember, this is a big hotel in Canada’s largest city on a Saturday night. Not only were they encouraging their guests to turn out lights when they left their rooms, reminding them that it was Earth Hour with a bookmark (made of recycled paper), they were taking this much more proactively. They had arranged a number of events in the public bars, restaurants and lounges to try and encourage as many people as possible to congregate in a few areas rather than distributed across the hotel. These events were lit by candles, a throwback to the history of the hotel. To put a modern twist on it they also had a pool party with floating candles
