A veteran Belgium-based project manager and current learning specialist at IBM shares his experiences on major projects in China and France, as well as the challenges of securing executive buy-in and working with different cultures.
Kris Troukens is no stranger to big projects. In fact, his resume reads a bit like “the bigger the better,” from managing the start up of the seven-property, 5,000-plus rooms that make up the EuroDisney resort in Paris, to the implementation of the first touch screen POS system in China.
And that’s just two examples of Troukens’ varied and near two-decades of experience. In addition to his work as consultant and learning specialist at IBM — he designed and implemented an education planning system for all European IBM employees — he regularly speaks on project management and IT issues. PMP certified, he is also director of special events and part of the board of the Project Management Institute chapter in Belgium, where he is based.
Troukens spoke to ProjectsAtWorkrecently from a holiday in France, offering tips on how to get that all-important executive buy-in, what struck a chord during his talk at the PMI Global Congress in Amsterdam, and why cultural waters need smart navigation.
