Governance continues to grow in importance in both the public and private sectors. Accountability to the public, to shareholders and to customers is increasingly important and the temptation to cut corners in these tough times is always there.
However, for many organizations governance is still seen as an outside factor--an independent group, committee or individual that monitors a project’s activities to ensure that it is being executed in accordance with defined standards. That approach made sense when governance was a new concept, but it’s been a way of life for several years now and it’s about time that we got better at incorporating governance requirements into our projects
Back to basics: What is governance?
While different organizations will have different interpretations (and will be impacted by different internal and external bodies), the concept of governance doesn’t differ much--it’s a way to ensure that the project is being executed in accordance with defined standards. Whether those standards are established by some kind of regulatory body or by the way that the company dictates that it needs to do business, the concept is the same.
