It takes much more than consistent paperwork and status meetings to satisfy a demanding customer. You certainly have to deliver the basics — timely reports and revisions, updated schedules, revised issues and risks lists — but sometimes that’s just not enough.

Projects@Work is pleased to introduce its newest editorial contributor, Brad Egeland, who will be sharing professional insights and practical advice based on more than 24 years as an IT manager and application developer, including 18 years of project management experience.
 
No two projects are the same and no two customers are, either. Some are more demanding than others. They need constantly coddling and stroking. Unfortunately, many times they also happen to be your largest customers, and they know it.
 
In my recent career, I’ve had three customers on large software implementations who demanded most of my time and energy while I was running their projects from the vendor side. Each of those projects was going well and I was communicating everything to them on a regular basis. On a weekly basis, I was:
 
> delivering a revised project schedule (more often if changes necessitated it)
> delivering a detailed status report
> delivering detailed budget and financial forecast information for the project
> delivering revised issues and risks lists
