I am in the midst of assessing a large project that I am taking over from another project manager who recently left our company. I spent a lot of time talking with the team members. I read most of the relevant project documents and got up to speed on the where the financials stood. I now have a good feel for what the project is delivering, I understand the challenges with the time schedule and I think I know where the landmines lie with the major scope problems.
One thing that kept bugging me about the project, however, was how quiet everyone on the floor was. There was a major delivery milestone in front of all of us yet the team seemed calm, cool and quiet. That worries me.
It’s now time to make a few phone calls to check the pulse of the team…
“Out-ed” as Technology Dinosaur?
I had a specific question about one of the trickier development areas, so I started my digging there. I picked up the phone and called the team lead for that area that I had been recently meeting with. “Hi, Tom,” she said as she answered the phone. Now, I know that her particular desk phone doesn’t have the caller ID screen for the company PBX system.
“How did you know it was me?” I asked.
“Easy--you’re the only one that calls on the telephone,” she said.
