As I write this, I am further north than I have ever been. I’m not technically in the Arctic as I am below the Arctic Circle, but I am more than 63 degrees north and I am in a very remote part of Canada. I’m in a place called Iqaluit, and in the last two weeks I have had to learn to rethink a lot of my project management beliefs. When I first got here I thought there was simply a different set of rules up here. But the more I experienced of this environment, the more I realized that it wasn’t that the rules were different, but rather that the approach had to be more refined to deal with the realities of life in a remote part of the world.
 
As gantthead is featuring real PM stories this month I wanted to share with you what is a very real story for me, and why I think that I am now a better project manager for the brief two-week period that I have spent here. I don’t want this to be a travelogue, but a brief overview of Iqaluit is necessary. Iqaluit is a new city--70 years ago it didn’t exist, and it has grown rapidly in the last 10 years since it became the capital of Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut. You can’t get here by road (there aren’t any). The ice retreats for ships to come in for about 10 weeks a year, but other than that the only access is by air.
