Hands up: Do you know who is in charge? Okay, let’s get a little more specific--in relation to the project you are working on, do you know which managers are in charge and what they are in charge of? When you’re out there breaking your back to help support systems, service and personnel meet the needs of your tasks and goals, do you have a firm idea as to who has your back and is ready to help you make decisions and take charge?

In order for a project to succeed, one of the most basic features it must have is a form of accountability. A project that does not have well laid-out and decisive direction regarding who is responsible for its success can have less devoted team members. This lack of leadership removes the impetus that a team needs to proceed unerringly on its project path or deal with potential deviations from that path. Additionally, the timeliness of a project will suffer if, during the all-important project commencement phase, there is no single person making the decisions necessary to keep the project stable.
