“I don’t think my team’s all on the same page,” Perry admitted. Just the week before, he held a project team meeting that announced a large change in the project direction. “I don’t get it. This week, it’s like they didn’t even hear me,” he said. “It seems the team showed up to the meeting, nodded their heads and then left the room and immediately went off in 27 completely different directions.”

“Have you ever heard the saying ‘you have to go the whole nine yards?’” I asked.

“What’s that?” Perry asked. “Another football cliché?”

Communication is difficult because you don’t always get the feedback you need to let you know how well the message is being received. Too often we say something and assume it was understood just as we meant it. The problem is that the message has to go through that unpredictable variant known as “people”.
