So the New Year is upon me. It is time for me to give thanks for the year that was and begin to lay down my plans for 2011. Like many, I have a habit of setting resolutions that fall by the wayside within a month or two, or sometimes less. Those resolutions very much focus on how I will treat myself, such as “I will exercise more” or “I will lose 15 pounds” or “I will read more books.” This year, I think I will try something a little different. I am not only going to pick a few resolutions for my personal self (“I will run more this year!”), but also resolutions for my professional, project management self. These resolutions are the things that I will do differently and that will have an impact on my project teams, and the people I engage with on projects. The following is a list of resolutions I am putting forward and will think about in the coming days, weeks and months…

  1. I resolve to set clear expectations for my team. I will clearly define and communicate the project expectations to members of my team. In my eyes, one of the greatest steps a project manager can take to ensure the success of any project is to set clear expectations with the team--both collectively and for each individual team member.
