Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. What do we enjoy about having mobile phones? Mostly, we like having the empowerment it gives us of being able to communicate with others when we need to. It is interesting to note though that, conversely, we dislike mobile phones because it means we can also be easily contacted by others.

These sentiments were commonly shared by an international community through the findings of a research project that was conducted by Professor Naomi Baron of the American University in Washington. The project looked at how mobile phone users felt about using their respective devices and was administered to a younger demographic (between the ages of 18-24), with surveys including an international community of users from Italy, Japan, South Korea, Sweden and the United States. Across the board, each country’s participants had similar prevailing attitudes about the ability to contact and be contacted.

Like many advances, mobile phone use and its accompanying technological enhancements have their good and bad sides. The ability to get help, seek information and, in general, contact an entity at a moment’s notice (and from a wide expanse of locations) gives us all a feeling of empowerment and control.
