Status Meetings Stink?

A survey finds 70 percent of information workers don’t believe status meetings help them accomplish work tasks, and 40 percent view status meetings as a waste of time.

Only 30 percent of U.S. information workers feel status meetings help them accomplish work tasks, and 40 percent believe status meetings are a waste of time, according to a recent online survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of work-execution software provider Clarizen.

A status meeting is defined as a meeting with the sole purpose of providing updates on projects or tasks to other workers or managers. Brainstorming meetings, discussions regarding strategy and company planning meetings remain valuable and worthwhile.

The survey found 67 percent of information workers spend between one to four (or more) hours per week just preparing for status meetings, while four out 10 respondents report that prepping for and attending status meetings is the largest obstacle to efficiently completing work. Two-thirds of respondents believe software helps them accomplish their work tasks.

Additionaly, the survey found:

  • 59 percent of information workers say preparing for a status meeting takes longer than the meeting itself
  • 55 percent of Information workers spend one to three hours attending status meetings to update each other on general activities
