A Tale of Two Perspectives

So begins Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, and so to begins my experiences looking at the project selection process currently in place in many companies today. On one hand, you have enlightened companies that are working to develop better project portfolio management systems. At the same time, these same companies are implementing approaches that dramatically limit their ability to actually select the right projects at the right time because they leave those involved on all sides of the process confused and frustrated. In this series, we will look at the project selection process from two different perspectives in order to identify some of the challenges they experience individually and collectively.

In this first article, we examine the perspective of a person who has what they feel is a great idea and would like to see it implemented in the company. In the second article, we will look at the perspective of management. They typically make up the membership on the project selection committee and are responsible for vetting the ideas that come in, deciding if the idea should proceed and become a project. Both groups view the project-selection process from different vantage points and offer differing perspectives on its function. Yet…
