The Technology Threat

Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. He has analyzed, defined, designed and overseen processes for various engagements including product usability and customer satisfaction, best practice enterprise standardization, relationship/branding structures, and distribution effectiveness and direction. He has also established corporate library solutions to provide frameworks for sales, marketing, training, and support divisions.

On occasions where technology advances, there are moments when business people get a little quickening in their hearts. Sometimes it’s for the thrill of new ideas and possibilities, but other times it’s out of fear and concern. That is because while there are many advances out there that can create a vibrant market, others can take away business from the established industries with the potential for removing a product or service from the corporate landscape entirely.

Real life examples speak loudly:

  • Cell phones – what a great idea. Tell that to the various landline telephone companies out there. They are finding it tougher to compete with a technology that gives customers significantly more market variety and plan options while providing a service that you can take beyond the four walls of your home or business.
  • Mega bookstores – nice place to go, for now. It was okay when there was coffee, pastries and musicians while you sat and tried out a new book, chatted with friends or roamed the magazine racks. But ebook readers and online delivery services have been taking a significant slice of the consumer pie and reduced their number.
  • Video rental stores – Entertainment for home use is readymade…or is it? Expanded cable services may have put a dent in the video rental market, but with the power and accessibility of Web …
