I’m going to start this article with a statement that might sound stupid--in fact, it may demonstrate that I am stupid, but here goes: Until recently, I didn’t realize that my project management skills were so valuable.

Now I suspect that may sound stupid because I have been paid to be a project manager by various companies over my career, and now I run my own company that has project management as a key revenue stream. Of course there is also the small matter of ProjectMnagement.com and the readers who are kind enough to tell me that my articles help them, so you would think that I would have figured it out by now.

But here’s the difference: Those are all commercial ventures; they’re part of a “job” or “career”. That’s vitally important of course, but I recently experienced an opportunity that made me feel as though I was actually doing something far more significant than simply offering project management services for money. That’s what I want to talk about a little bit in this article. I’ll try not to make it too self-indulgent, and I hope that it makes you think a little bit about how you can use your own project management ability to add real value.
