Background
Project
A project is defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service—temporary, because every project has a beginning and an end; unique, because the product or service is different in some way from all other products and services.
Projects are undertaken at all levels of an organization and involve one or more people and their durations range from a few weeks to several years. Projects may involve a single unit in an organization or they may cross organizational boundaries, as in joint ventures.
Project Management
Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements and this is accomplished through processes like:
- Initiating
- Planning
- Executing
- Controlling
- Closing
The project team manages the work, which typically involves:
- Competing demands for scope, time, cost, risk, and quality
- Stakeholders with varying needs and expectations
- Identifying requirements
Many of the processes within project management are iterative in nature, which is due to the necessity for progressive elaboration throughout the project’s life cycle.
