Often  in the initiating and planning phases of projects, definition and mitigations tools are overlooked. During project initiation, utilizing these tools is more important than ever, to bring out true stakeholders, inputs, and users. In compressed business climates, project risk management may be overlooked altogether; however, it is in this environment that risk management is most crucial. A host of tools have been around for many years and are hardened by many industries. These tools are not always used and the phases are shortened because many teams are short on budget, staff, skill, and time or simply do not understand the value of such initiating and planning exercises. This is, however, a very short-sited view. Not getting the most out of the initiating and planning phases will always lead to longer-term issues. Although these issues may not lead to a complete failure, they will need to be corrected later, no matter how small they are or how insignificant they seem, before the product can be commercialized or delivered. In this article, we will look at a few tools that can be used in conjunction with each other to enrich the initiating and planning phases. While this article does not attempt to give a detailed description of these tools, we will demonstrate their importance as well as how they can work together, to enrich the initiating and planning phases.
