As elaborated on in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Fourth edition (Project Management Institute [PMI], 2008), the project management body of knowledge consists of nine Knowledge Areas (Project Integration Management, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communication Management, Project Risk Management, and Project and Procurement Management) spread over five major Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing). Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification instruction concentrates on presenting the academic side of project management. It is often difficult to stress a more pragmatic, methodical side, especially in planning. Effective project planning should be a formal step-by-step process and should allow the project manager to understand as much about the project before he or she begins to create the project management plan.
