Improving Hardware Project Performance in a Software-Centric Information Technology Department

There are many advantages to being employed in the information technology (IT) department of a Fortune 500 organization. Our company is growing, allowing for growth in our IT department. New ideas are welcomed, and problems are viewed as challenges and learning opportunities. I face the challenge of effectively supporting hardware projects within an IT department in which the majority of projects are software oriented. This article will provide an explanation of the current state of our organization, the identified areas of opportunity, and the proposed solutions for these opportunities. Project managers of IT hardware projects reading this article will find practical ideas they may be able to use to function more effectively within a software-centric IT department and the result will lead to improved project performance.

The Current State

The relatively recent growth of our IT department has necessitated the standardization and governance of our projects. Our organization created a department within IT, dedicated in part, to developing processes and implementing guidelines for project management. Although not labeled a project management office (PMO), the processes and guidelines created by the department will serve to assist project managers with the goal of increasing project success.
