Honesty is STILL the Best Policy
The training department at the company where we started our career had a new age look to it. Maybe this seemed so because most of the trainees were recent graduates. Perhaps this perception was also influenced by the lively pictures adorning the training department’s walls, pictures which were not the somber scenes usually found in offices.
There was one particular poster that was very catchy. It showed the well-known children’s comic and television character Dennis the Menace standing before his neighbor, Mr. Wilson, a character often portrayed with a stern face and next to a broken window that Dennis had damaged. Beneath these characters was the poster’s message: “Honesty is STILL the best policy.”
It is important that each team member communicate – to the project manager –any threat about the project’s success, even if the team member caused the threat. How can you promote an open environment in which team members are not afraid to own up to their mistakes? The answer is simple: By being honest yourself.
Although it may not be very obvious, honesty leads to trustworthiness. When you are honest and straightforward, your team members will feel that they can rely on you and that you will treat them fairly.
