Team Management: An Accountable Working Model for Matrix Teams
In today’s world of heterogeneous requirements, most complex information technology (IT) projects are executed in a matrix environment. The involvement and contribution from domain experts, across verticals are always required for their implementation. This may include teams from various streams, including functional, technical, infrastructure, training, support and maintenance, and other support groups. The major challenge with this type of project team structure is having an amicable and effective working relationship with clear lines of objectives, responsibilities, open communications, and accountabilities. This article attempts to propose a working model that can help the program manager achieve the desired objectives from all the teams (Figure 1).

Domain-specific business analysts (BAs) and subject matter experts (SMEs) are required to analyze the existing processes and propose an efficient alternate that helps the customer achieve their organization’s objectives and reap the benefits.
The architecture team designs solutions that deliver existing requirements, including security, functionality, reliability, usability, configurability, efficiency, maintainability, as well as future needs, such as enhancements, scalability, portability, accessibility, localization, and many others.
