The Mind: A Wonderful Thing to Map

Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. He has analyzed, defined, designed and overseen processes for various engagements including product usability and customer satisfaction, best practice enterprise standardization, relationship/branding structures, and distribution effectiveness and direction. He has also established corporate library solutions to provide frameworks for sales, marketing, training, and support divisions.

How much time do you spend on organizing a project?

To keep track of all the complex tasks required in hardware and software development, we often find ourselves using an equally complex project management method, software or system. It can be especially frustrating for PMs who, after spending a lot of effort in setting something up, soon realize afterward that it is too complicated a process for team members to update their status. This is even more frustrating when you recognize that the time utilized for managing the project takes longer than it does to do the work.

The follow-up question then becomes, just how difficult should this process be?

A creative and intuitive process, mind mapping is also used by many PMs who seek more involvement by their project teams while at the same time capture an extensive level of detail that may not be covered by other project management techniques. Those who are familiar with traditional project plan methodologies may find mind mapping a way in which to simplify project management workloads.
