Project Management Involving Emerging Technologies
Stop for a moment and consider just how much you leverage, both formally and informally, on your work experience when you are managing a project. Every project manager I know leverages their “gut feeling” in the course of executing their duties.
Now think about how often an event on a current project triggers a memory of a past project that you can draw upon. The actual value of this experience has been unquantifiable for years. There are those that believe other methods and techniques can fill this void, but skeptics feel that remains to be seen. That being said, that value is understood and exploited to some extent in nearly every project that comes along.
Experience is something seasoned project managers draw upon while executing their duties throughout the life of their assignment. Today, we are at the starting line of a new era of rapid technological advancement with extraordinary implications. The Internet of Things (IoT, the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing Internet infrastructure), wearable computing technology, vehicles functioning as computing platforms and smart cities are all new technology-latent initiatives that are beginning to emerge with the number of projects growing steadily.
