Enterprise PLM Data Migration: A Project Management Challenge
It is widely recognized that of all information technology implementation projects, the data migration initiatives are among the most challenging ones. In this article, the authors hope to share their experiences and learnings from such an enterprise endeavor recently undertaken at a major manufacturing company with global presence. For the purpose of this article we will limit the discussion to the project management aspect and not focus on the technical or functional aspects.
PLM Program Background
Due to extensive growth of the company the current product lifecycle management (PLM) systems were outgrowing the existing setup. Over the last 40 years, as the customer base increased, the amount of data generated to support the business also multiplied exponentially. At present, the various business units comprising the company use disparate systems (different PLM systems, different versions, different architecture, and sometimes even different processes). Hence, the company’s leadership initiated an effort to establish a common system, providing a competitive edge in the market. The objective of the PLM transformation program is to align and harmonize the processes, enabling collaboration across functions, businesses, with suppliers and with customers, leading to greater company profitability.
