This article focuses on how organizations continue to practice agile for years and still not reap its full benefits unless they focus on the core aspect of why they are practicing agile and how it will benefit the organization. This article is a continuation of an article on Scrum values published by PMI Knowledge Shelf in August 2012.

Success in the marketplace is one of the key reasons why organizations practice agile. Additionally, deep knowledge of agile values and agile principles enables organizations to implement successful agile practices and methods and thereby compete successfully in the marketplace.

However, if organizations practice agile just because other organizations practicing agile have been successful without understanding the deeper implications of the philosophy or because it is the latest trend in project management, then they are not going to succeed in the long run and they may fail in successfully practicing agile management methods.

Novel market environments can lead to new structures. Practices that once proffered a competitive advantage can delay and handicap organizations that continue to employ them. But when market environments change, how should organizations be restructured to harness the change? How should control over resources and people be managed, and by whom?
