Personal Knowledge Management in Action
Knowledge management has always been an intriguing concept to me. I often hear “corporate speak” about knowledge management and the need to retain intellectual assets within an organization. How is this really implemented? I’ve seen “best practice repositories” and “business process centers of excellence”, however I still find real knowledge management implemented at an individual level.
Below are just a few questions I’ve often asked within an ever-changing organization:
- How do I submit a purchase order?
- What are the reporting expectations for the project portfolio management tool?
- How many people need to sign off on this document?
- What are the tips to the resource management submission process?
A lot of these questions are based on not knowing the business process or the “tribal knowledge” resided within individual people. I often got a lot of different answers and needed my own personal knowledge management tool to sort through every information nugget. Ten years ago, project managers were restricted to sticky notes, Notepad and file servers for limited knowledge management. Fortunately, today there are a lot of different knowledge management tools to consider. Below are three of my favorite knowledge management tools and how I use them in the real world.
