Global State of the PMO in 2015

A new global survey on the state of PMOs finds its role continues to evolve and mature in the business environment, but metrics are lacking to measure value and effectiveness. In addition, as the use of Agile has increased, PMOs are challenged with how to apply it.

In its fourth annual benchmarking survey on the state of the PMO, global project management training company ESI International has investigated the PMO’s function, its strategic role in the organization, its level of maturity and value for the overall business, the role that Agile plays within the PMO, and its involvement in training project management professionals.

Key findings from “The Global State of the PMO 2015” include:

   >> More Strategic and Mature: While the number of PMOs remains steady, the level of PMO maturity has grown worldwide, and while it is still early days, there is evidence that PMOs are increasingly moving away from just providing monitoring and controlling activities and instead are moving upwards to provide support at the strategic and portfolio level.

   >> The PMO Value Dilemma: While more and more PMOs are reaching full-scale maturity — demonstrated by an increase in services which support strategy and portfolio management — they have a long way to go when it comes to demonstrating value through considered, …
