Talent Management Doesn’t Begin With the People
The focus within talent management is understandably about the people--the need to hire, retain and develop quality employees that can help us to achieve our goals and objectives. The last thing I want to do is tell you that’s wrong, but I do believe that we need to extend the concept a little earlier in the process. Specifically, we need to integrate what we typically think of as talent management with our resource planning needs, otherwise we face a disconnect before the talent management process even starts.
If we aren’t bringing the right people on board, then it doesn’t really matter how well we manage them! That’s what I want to look at in this article--creating a strong foundation for talent management through better planning.
Strategic resource management and talent management
Recently, the concept of strategic resource management has been growing in popularity. It is the concept of aligning resource management with strategic and portfolio planning such that we understand how the organization’s planned progress will change the resourcing model for success. Those changes may be required in order to complete the project work that is being undertaken, as well as the operational resourcing impact of the completion of those projects.
