1. Do you prefer an informal way or formal way of settling differences among team members?
My preference is always for the informal methods, and these methods and techniques should be discussed and documented as part of the team’s ground rules in the team charter. However, this also depends on the environment the team operates in both at the organizational and country levels. Organization and country culture will also have an impact on what works best in that environment.
2. If a person is not interested in their job or task, how can I motivate them?
There is a need for either a coaching or counseling session in this situation. I would chat with the person and start the dialogue with open-ended questions, such as: (1) tell me what you think and feel about this project; (2) why do you feel that way; and (3) what can I do to help? What motivates individuals is very different for each person. It may also be true that this person came off a tough recent assignment with a horrible manager.
