Effective Use of Kanban for Monitoring and Controlling Low-Complexity Projects in a High-Volume Project Environment
Abstract
Kanban is an effective tool for monitoring and controlling high-volume/low-complexity projects when the goal is to increase throughput, limit work in process (WIP), and measure (monitor and control) flow in project environments. Performing organizations, whose efforts are focused on project deployment, may benefit from implementation of a Kanban system. The Kanban method hopes to measure the flow of tasks through respective processes while utilizing the performing organization’s overall systems and methodologies. Kanban hopes to bridge the gap between production and project management scheduling. Organizations whose efforts are focused on increasing throughput and task completion, while simultaneously reducing inventories on the shop floor and lead time, can benefit from the explanations given here. Kanban has the ability to fill the void, as related to production scheduling, within nontraditional project environments—those not solely limited to IT and software development.
