Disruption in Project Management

Technology is disruptive. Today, this is a commonly buzzed phrase. There are disruption blogs, disruption consultants, disruption conferences, and disruptive technology challenges. The winners of the 2014 Disruptive Technology Challenge, organized by Bird&Bird and Ntegra, included 12 companies selected from applicants in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Since 1996, Ntegra Greenside Ltd. has run an annual IT Director Study Tour to Silicon Valley, California. Recently, The University of Southern California has announced a new degree program in disruption.

But what does it mean when you come across this phrase in an informal conversation? According to Merriam-Webster, “disrupt” means “to break apart” or “to throw into disorder.” The word has a negative connotation attached to it.

In the movie Dennis the Menace, Mr. Wilson brands Dennis as disruptive. But on his part, Dennis is an innocent little master who tries his best to help out neighbors.
