When teams are working in multiple locations, time zones and cultures, there is no substitute for clear upfront goals, real-time visibility, flexible work approaches and powerful collaboration tools. Here are seven measures that are fundamental to success on global projects.

I was recently asked by a frazzled customer for advice on managing global projects, including considerations for communicating across multiple time zones and cultures, allocating team resources, and keeping activities on time and on budget. It’s a question that has been replayed to me as businesses expand their footprint, projects become more granular in scope, and people become more accustomed to working with virtual, remote and even contractor teams.

Clear goals, communications and deadlines are paramount, but they all need to be considered within the framework of a company’s culture, priorities and resources. I’ve seen many individual projects derail because companies have too many other projects underway, and so managing time, costs and resources simultaneously becomes overwhelming, while a lack of transparency leads to cost overruns and unexpected delays.
