Exam Panic Time?

The sixth edition of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) is coming…is it time to panic? How important is it to write the PMP exam based on the current edition? (Full disclosure, I deliver PMP/CAPM preparation boot camps for one of North America’s largest training companies, and I also provide individual/small group exam preparation sessions.)
I recently completed facilitating a series of courses to a cohort attending a center for continuing education at a major university. This group takes six three-day courses during a 2.5-month period. Each course presents a practical approach to project management while working within the Project Management Institute’s framework. As the group completes the 130 hours of training, the inevitable question is: Is now the time to complete their CAPM/PMP accreditation? They aren’t alone in asking themselves the question.
Every three to four years, PMI publishes a new PMBOK® Guide. It represents a standard that reflects the most up-to-date practices in project management. The enhancements have taken it from early editions of well under 200 pages to the current (fifth) edition, which is nearly 600 pages! This significant expansion reflects the expansion of knowledge and value project managers provide.
