There are many ways of looking at leadership, and they run the gamut from practicing it to studying it to teaching it. For most of us project management practitioners, we want to practice leadership. We want to understand it, yearn to do it, aspire to become better at it—and be it. In this article, I hope to give you some different ways of looking at leadership that can help you put it into action—and use over and over again to stay in action—in your quest to be a great leader.

This “countdown to leadership” looks at four different ways of thinking about leadership, each providing something that you can apply at any moment in your journey:

  1. First, we’ll explore four different styles of leadership.
  2. Second, we’ll explore three actionable things for any situation that you must have in place to be a leader.
  3. Third, you’ll need to navigate your way through uncertainty—and it can help if you focus on two key things.
  4. Fourth, we will identify the one thing that—if you can accomplish it—will make you a leader in the purest form.

These are all very simple things to remember, and that can be used again and again. So it’s four, three, two, one…let’s go!
