‘Planning is Cool’: Motivating Kids with Youth Fiction

Gary M. Nelson, BSC, PMP (Gazza) is passionate about sharing knowledge and making project management concepts more accessible, particularly to new and aspiring project managers (of all ages). Said another way, he likes to tell stories to help convey complex concepts in a way that helps the concepts “stick.” Who says learning shouldn't be fun?

Gary is the author of the Project Kids Adventures series and Gazza's Guide to Practical Project Management: Tips and advice on Surviving the Project Management Journey. We sat down with Gary to learn about his motivations for bringing project management content to youth, and what we can expect next…

1. What inspired you to write the PM books for kids?
The inspiration for the Project Kids Adventures series comes from several sources. My wife had been bugging me for years to write a children’s book because I have been making up silly songs and bedtime stories for my children for years as they grew.

The other inspiration came from a conversation at a project management leadership conference in Vancouver in 2012, when I was talking to Diane Fromm at the PMI Educational Foundation booth.
