Your Second Day as a Project Manager

Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. He has analyzed, defined, designed and overseen processes for various engagements including product usability and customer satisfaction, best practice enterprise standardization, relationship/branding structures, and distribution effectiveness and direction. He has also established corporate library solutions to provide frameworks for sales, marketing, training, and support divisions.

The first day is in the books—successful or unsuccessful, you are now in “Day 2” of project management. Sure, some of the polish has worn off, but guess what? Those challenges you faced on the first day are still there.

Stress: Are You Over It Yet?
If you have already been working at an organization and ramping up to be a project manager, then you are fortunate in some ways. You know who the players are, who to speak with and who runs the show—those things can hold you back (both in your own perception of who you are, and what others may think of you); however, they can help you get started with some knowledge that takes time to come by on the job. That also means that on Day 2, you should be hot on the trail of project deliverables and engaging your project team, right?

For the unfortunate and true newbies to the job—the ones who have to master all the nuances of a new company, its human and non-human resources, and the location of the bathroom—there are considerably more stressors. That being said, you may be given a little leeway about learning the ropes (before also learning that some ropes can be used to hang you).

Expectations may be high on your part and from your employer, but until you have some experience, you should expect some stress. Truth is, you will probably still have stress as you gain experience and move onto new …
