Driving the Culture of Change
This is a pretty exciting month for me. ProjectManagement.com’s theme is leading-edge project management—and just in time for me to write some articles, the new PMI Pulse of the Profession® Report for 2020 (Ahead of the Curve: Forging a Future-Focused Culture) has come out.. I’m going to look at some of the concepts from that report in my pieces and offer some thoughts on how we as project managers can respond to the trends and opportunities that the report brings up.
Let’s start with this quote from the report: “Executive leaders are no longer simply bracing for change. Instead, they’re rebuilding their organizations to make agility and creativity part of the organizational DNA. More than half (53 percent) of organizations surveyed in Pulse say they place a high priority on building a culture receptive to change.”
Well, no surprise that change is important; any PM who has been aware of what’s been happening in the world for the last few years will have seen that. But that quote suggests that organizations are effectively reinventing themselves to make change a key part of what they are, not just what they do. And they are recognizing that to achieve that requires a commitment to evolving organizational culture to make it more receptive to change.
That should be pretty exciting for any project manager to read because
