PMIEF Partner F1iS Hosts First Virtual Event in 20 Year History

In September of 2020, F1 in SchoolsTM—one of the world’s largest STEM educational programs and a PMIEF partner—hosted a virtual event in place of its highly anticipated UK National Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first time in the 20-year history of the organization, 34 teams vying to become the UK National Champions were unable to compete together at a live event. However, F1 in SchoolsTM was determined not to shatter the dreams of so many students and created an exciting livestreamed final to meet the demands of the new environment we are all living in. 

With the 34 teams racing live and over 5,000 students watching online, Britannia Red from Robert May’s School in Odiham, Hampshire took the 2020 F1 in Schools National Champions crown in a thrilling win to this year’s competition. 

An innovative hybrid event was created, combining live racing with video presentations, written submissions and distanced car scrutineering, all assessed remotely by a panel of expert judges: Tom Deacon, commentator for Formula 1’s Esports series; Georgina Edwards, an alumni of the competition; and Sophie Harker, an aerodynamics and performance engineer at BAE Systems and winner of the IET's Young Women Engineer of the Year Award 2018.
