The current overall pace of change is difficult for businesses and professionals to keep up with and adapt to. Many have fallen behind the accelerating pace of emerging technology that is driving today's dramatic change to the digital world.

At this time, it is absolutely clear that many businesses and professionals need to play catch-up. This is not a one-time activity. Updating your professional skills is now a continuous requirement. We must recognize there is a stigma attached to the push for this—and to some organizations requiring it. There are some that feel this is just a way to make money through certifications (and the requirement of continuing education to retain those certifications).

That negative image should be addressed by many organizations across a number of industries. After all, that negative image has to be contributing to many not addressing the growing digital divide in the business community and among professionals.

It is important we are aware of and keep in mind the growing digital divide—the growing economic, educational and social imbalance and inequalities that exist. Many believe this gap is widening between those who have computers and online access (and the know-how to use them) and those who do not.
