5 Ways to Foster Deliberate Team Development

One of the main tenets of project management is that it’s about the people involved in a project just as much as delivering a product or service to the market. Often, leaders get so wrapped up in what they bring to the table that they forget to take time to deliberately develop those on their project team. I believe this is a critical misstep in our roles as project managers.

Project managers need to be deliberate in ensuring that they don’t simply generate project teams based on what the subject matter experts can do, but on their possibility of growth potential. This means that it’s imperative for lead project managers to take time to review project team members’ dossiers and work history as well as get to know them personally before a project starts.

To really help team members get the most out of each and every project, leaders need to:

1. Discuss with team members the finer details of their resume and work history. Read between the lines and ask in-depth questions. One thing to consider or look for is a history of performing in the same roles or functional areas over a prolonged period. While not necessarily a personal choice, it could indicate a lack of confidence on the previous manager’s part in the member’s capabilities.
