Tapping Into Your PM Earning Power
Over the years of writing for ProjectManagement.com, there are some topics that I’ve shied away from. And one of those topics has definitely been the question of money—salary, bonuses, etc. It’s a very personal subject for people, something that varies considerably across regions and industries—and it’s fraught with risk to write about. It also shouldn’t be the reason why people pursue a career, and I guess I was concerned that by focusing on it, I would be making it more significant than it should be.
But let’s be honest: None of us, or at least very few of us, would be involved in project management if we weren’t being paid. The reason we work is to secure the resources we need to enjoy the rest of our lives. And the more money we earn, the more resources we have to pay for accommodation, transportation, investments in our (and our children’s) futures, etc. It follows that the more we can earn, the more we can potentially enjoy the other aspects of our lives and secure a better future for those we care about.
So when I was researching the 2021 PMI Talent Gap Report for another article and I saw that project management-oriented employment occupations in projectized industries earned an average of 78% (!) more than non-PM oriented roles, well…that made me sit up and take notice.
