New Ways of Working Are Here to Stay

The two-year quarantine we’ve been living with has brought about a lot of change in how projects are managed, products are developed and released, and organizations coordinate work. Even from the beginning, people have been talking about getting things “back to normal,” or returning to the way things used to be. While ideally, the upcoming years will see an end to the global pandemic, and some sense of normalcy will return, it’s becoming clear that some of the changes made for the quarantine will stick around even after it is all over.

Some things that changed were already in progress a few years ago, and the quarantine merely accelerated their adoption. Others were created by all of us looking to make sense of the new way of working and coming up with new and better ideas than what we were doing before. After the first few months of the pandemic, people began to realize that attempting to replicate the office environment, but with everyone working from home, was not the right approach. Instead, some of the new processes were working better than the old ones and would have been a good idea even without the crisis that initiated them.

Here are a few trends from the past year that are likely to continue into the next year, and probably beyond that. Even if the pandemic ends, we won’t be going back to the way things were, at least not completely. And while this was hard to …
